Hi there,
This issue's tip: wait for the EOB
A bill from a doctor or hospital can arrive before your insurer has finished processing the claim. Wait for the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurer, then compare. The amount you owe on the bill should match "your responsibility" on the EOB. If it doesn't, call the billing office before paying.
More in How to read your Explanation of Benefits.
A billing term explained
Allowed amount: the price your plan agreed to pay for a service, which is often much lower than the amount billed. Your coinsurance is usually a percentage of the allowed amount, not the billed amount. See the medical bill decoder.
Reader question
"The hospital bill is huge and I can't pay it. What now?" Ask the billing office for their financial assistance policy and an application, even if you have insurance. Many hospitals reduce or forgive bills based on income. See Hospital financial assistance.
