Paying less for prescriptions
Generics, 90-day supplies and comparing prices.
Prescription prices vary a lot between pharmacies and between brand and generic versions. A few questions can lower what you pay.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist
- Is there a generic or a lower-cost alternative?
- Would a 90-day supply cost less?
- Is this on my plan's formulary, and at which tier?
Compare
- Prices at different pharmacies, including mail order
- Your insurance price vs. the cash price (sometimes cash is lower; ask whether it counts toward your deductible)
- Manufacturer assistance programs for brand-name drugs
Safety first
Only use licensed pharmacies, and never stop or change a medication without talking to your doctor.
